Radiation Day 17 – Getting an Extra “Boost”

Only THREE treatments left! Today marked a special milestone – the start of my “boost” treatments. Apparently, there are lots of names for this, but the biggest difference is that I’m no longer getting radiation to my entire breast anymore. Now they are just focused on giving a higher dose to the incision site. My treatment took a bit longer because they needed to line me up slightly differently, draw some new lines on my body and then give me the treatment.

I met with Dr. Okoye today to check on my progress. He said my skin is still holding up excellently! That’s probably partly because of the gel that I’m using and possibly partly because I have been so good about applying it regularly to ensure my skin stays moisturized. He was impressed that aside from it being red immediately following treatment, you wouldn’t know I was getting radiation. He is on call this week, so he’s taking vacation the following week and won’t see me for my final appointment next Tuesday. I will still continue to put the gel on for another week or two and then I will meet with him again in 2 – 3 weeks to check on my skin condition to ensure it is improving.

Even though I only have three total treatments left, it’ll actually be a few more weeks to ensure that I am fully on the mend. The nurse in the office was so sweet and she gave me a gift certificate for the medi-spa at the hospital! I remember when I first learned about the spa, I thought it was crazy that they even have a spa at the hospital! It’s actually a full-service spa. You can get massages, facials, acupuncture and waxing! I knew they had a person who came around to give massages in the infusion suite, but I didn’t know that I could go there as a cancer patient and get massages. The nice thing is that they know you are undergoing or recently underwent treatment, so they can make better accommodations for you than if you went to a commercial spa.

So close I can feel it!

  2. Cancer patients are treated very well, although sometimes it don’t feel like we’ve gone through a lot because we know how to handle what we’re doing and going through. it actually is a big deal and the nurses at the hospital that I was at are more than nice, I was treated so well and with the respect that I wrote them a nice letter and in return instead of getting the usual gift I received a cup a succulent plant a little bit of candy some tokens and a bookmark and we all cried because I also have my radiation Hedgehog that somebody gave me that I never met in the store. You keep kicking it girl and I’m glad you enjoyed your spa wishing you loads of luck. You’re kicking it like a champ
